Stamps were initially printed in sheets without any perforations and this meant that the local postmistress or master would use a pair of scissors to cut each stamp from the sheet as they were purchased. Whilst this was not a problem for the Stamp Printer, many a Philatelist has rued the day when a pair of scissors were not used accurately. This was all to change in 1854 when, following several years of experimentation, the perforated stamp was introduced so giving birth to the format which has lasted through to the modern day.
Modern day stamps have now evolved to a self adhesive format which has coatings on the face of the stamp which can be electronically read and the old gum backed stamps have given way to the self adhesive variety
